Hotel Rwanda was excellent. I am getting the book now. This is another one of those movies that tell us about real things that happened in the world. I just realized that leaving my review as Hotel Rwanda was excellent sounded flippant. Thus, I must expand.
This is history. This was RECENT history and about the atrocities that happened in Africa between Africans that have been separated into a group that has more european features and another group that has darker skin with evidently wider noses. I do not know why they grouped people like this but the groups are Tsutsi and Hoodoo (I have the spelling all wrong but giving you an idea). These groups have oppressed each other and the last group that was oppressed killed the man in charge of keeping the peace. Then, a lot of brutal killings happened - of the Tsutsi people by the Hoodoo people. They make it clear in the movie that Hotel Rwanda is the best hotel in the entire location and the classy but temporary hotel manager thinks the upheaval will end quickly with the help of the UN and people outside the country helping. Little by little we see that people are saved...the white people. And his hotel becomes a Haven for those africans who make it there . He really has no protection from killers coming into his hotel...his weapon is his intelligence, persistance, charm and connections. I could not believe that this happened so recently...I was in college then. This is a historical movie not to miss. It even prompts you to want to do something about it rather than, as they say in the movie, " I think people will say "oh my god that is tragic" and return to eating their dinners". It makes you want to do something..and I am looking to do something...
